This is a nice synopsis of major P2P applications and their networking, in the form of a “how to block these apps”. Gives some insight on P2P and firewalls.

    or take the reverse approach
    and block all ports except a few very specific ones and link those to specific protocols and maybe even hosts (effectively allowing only HTTP and SMTP to go out and that only from the proxy server).
